The Methodist Modern Art Collection
in Dublin at the RHA
The exhibition in Dublin is now closed and will be on display next in Leicester from May 2019 – further details on the Collection web site.
The Methodist Church in Britain has built up a fine collection of Modern Art on Christian themes over the last sixty years and 30 of the pictures are on display in the RHA until 22 December.
The organisers for this first Dublin exhibition of the collection have devised a variety of resources for visitors – a school resource pack; commentaries by experts, brief descriptions of each picture, biographies of the artists, and other information – available on this website.
There are over 50 works, including some by well-known artists such as Graham Sutherland, Elisabeth Frink, William Roberts and Patrick Heron.
Most of the pictures depict scenes from the life and teaching of Christ: some artists were or are believing Christians, others not.
From the early church to the present day images have played a crucial role in the exploration of the Christian faith. Since the catacombs of Rome the gospel has been articulated as much in image as it has in word.
The Methodist Modern Art Collection takes its place in this long tradition, providing an opportunity for new encounters, vibrant expressions of God’s love and a whole range of conversations that are both missional and pastoral.
